Sixteen years ago I asked my Aunt Ruth if I should go to Iceland, Norway, or Ireland (she was head of AAA travel for the Midwest and has been around the world several times, so I figured if anyone knew a great place to go it was her.) She said Newfoundland, I looked back at the list of choices I had given her and said, Newfoundland was not on the list. Her reply was that Newfoundland was the most beautiful place she had ever been. Pretty strong recommendation, I was not disappointed and I am sure that you won’t either.

Join us for a photographic adventure of a lifetime

Itinerary

Our workshop begins with one day and one night on St. John’s historic harbor and Cape Spear, there is much to see and photograph on the easternmost point in North America, from ships, lighthouses, old forts, and historic maritime architecture. The next three days will be spent in the area of Trinity Newfoundland, the oldest continuously occupied town in North America. Here we will spend three thrilling days of; puffins, eagles, osprey, one outing in a zodiac for whale photography, and if the conditions are right some late melting ice-burgs.

On our fifth day, we leave for the most picturesque region of Newfoundland; the Twillingate islands. This region is old-time Newfoundland at its best. The rugged natural and cultural scenery is counterbalanced by the warmth and friendliness of the inhabitants. Three days here are barely enough to capture all the region has to offer. In addition to the quaint villages and fishing harbors on the Twillingate, we will tour Fogo island renowned for its architecture and a world UNESCO site.

Our last evening is at Cape St. Mary’s, one of the largest Gannet Sea-Bird colonies in the world. The last day is spent traveling through the southern Avalon Peninsula which is home to roving herds of Woodland Caribou.

Newfoundland’s exquisite scenery is only matched by the altruistic character of its inhabitants.

Instruction

During the workshop, there will be instructional sessions on image capture, digital raw conversion, field shoot instruction, and a review of images made during the workshop.

One-on-one instruction in the field is the hallmark of all our tours and workshops. We are here to help you get great images not simply pad our own portfolio.

Demonstrations in the field will include:

Instruction on the use of filters and filter systems for landscape photographs–if you don’t have a filter system ask us about what to purchase prior to your trip.

Best techniques for approaching birds and other wildlife–how to get close and get the shot!

Auto-focus systems can be complex and challenging–especially when photographing birds and birds in flight. We will work with you one on one to set your camera up for maximum effectiveness in these challenging situations.

Finding great photographic situations is the key to travel photography. We will discuss how and why we choose our locations so you know what to look for.
