Against the fading light of a western sunset on the North Plains, this workshop will illuminate the intricacies of light painting.  Work with the fading light of twilight to set just the right illumination for an abandoned barn. Return the inner glow to a homestead that has been abandoned for years or illuminate an old tractor or sedan against the Milky Way. This workshop will offer you the opportunity and skills to make these photographs.

Instruction

This workshop will teach you how to light a subject, so it blends and is a part of the surrounding landscape. You will discover the difference between using light panels, spotlights, flashlights, headlamps, glow sticks, and other light sources. You will learn how to light for twilight and night scenes.  You will learn what exposures that are short enough to capture the Milky Way and how to create star trails. We will develop light schemes that are suitable for long exposures and the proper light schemes for short exposures.

Location

Kenmare North Dakota. We may change the starting location so check with us before making travel arrangements.

Kenmare is about 50 miles NW of Minot ND. If you are planning to fly you will want to fly into Minot ND where we can pick you up and at the end of the workshop drop you off.

Kenmare is approximately an 8-hour drive from Mpls MN.

Sample Itinerary

We will shoot at sunset and well into the night. There will be plenty of opportunities for breaks, naps, and rest. There will also be plenty of opportunities to capture stunning photographs.

Each day’s itinerary will be determined by weather, light, and subject opportunity. Each year we strive to make this workshop different, adding new locations and subjects. We are in constant search for subjects and locations. Every workshop is a blend of new locations and old favorites. Typically we are scouting new locations right up to the week prior to the workshop, therefore, an exact itinerary is impossible to give here. This itinerary is for sample purposes only! We will give the final itinerary on the first day of the workshop–and then it may change again!
