Springtime In The UP - ColdSnap Photography

Springtime In The UP

June 1-4, 2023

Spring comes a little later in the north country—but that doesn’t make it any less spectacular. The rivers are running swift from the recent snow melt, trees are just beginning to leaf out. Bird migration is in full swing, and the trilliums are blooming! Spring on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is full of life being reborn.

The UP is renowned for it rivers and waterfalls, there are something like 85 waterfalls in Gogebic County alone! Each of these waterfalls has a unique look and feel. The shoreline of Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks is astounding, and the rich coniferous forests are among the most photogenic you’ll find anywhere.

Location

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan and along the shores of Lake Superior.

Our first two nights we will spend near Ontonagon Michigan which is conveniently located near the Porcupine Mountains, Lake of the Clouds, numerous rivers, and waterfalls including Presque Isle, and Bond Falls. Our last night we will be based in Newberry Michigan, here we will be near Whitefish Point, Tahquamenon Falls, and The Shallows of Whitefish Bay.

Instruction

Instruction will include landscape photography techniques, including the use of filters, macro and close-up photography, and bird photography technique. This will be an excellent spring primer to get you up to speed for the coming summer season.

Itinerary

Day One

Our first day will include trips to several nearby waterfalls. There are numerous parks for us to choose from, Presque Isle, Little Carp River, Bonanza Falls. The day’s instruction will include field demonstration and instruction on landscape photography and use of filters for effects.

Day Two

Early on our second day we will travel to the Lake of the Clouds, for the spectacular sunrise over the reflecting lake waters (if sunrise isn’t promising we will delay this until the morning of the third day) The rest of the day will include a trip to Bond Falls and exploring the forests for wildflowers.

Instruction in the afternoon will include field demonstrations and instruction on macro photography, including managing depth of field, and using selective focus.

Day Three

Our third day we will move to the eastern end of the UP where the bird migration allows up to photograph songbirds as they migrate across Lake Superior. Whitefish Point is a great spot to find a wide variety of warblers and other songbirds as they prepare for their trans lake flight. We will also take in the waterfalls at Tahquamenon Falls.

Instruction in the afternoon will include field demonstrations and instruction on bird photography, including autofocus settings to optimize in flight photography, and setting up your camera for birds and wildlife.
