Springtime In The San Juans - ColdSnap Photography

Springtime In The San Juans

Durango Colorado

May 21-27, 2023

Mineral Creek

There is no better “high” than the feeling of a fresh breeze coming off a snowfield while looking at the majestic beauty of the rugged mountain peaks and a sky so blue it is almost black. Springtime—before the snowmelt gives the San Juan’s that majestic look. Home to 6 peaks over 14,000 feet and another 13 that are over 13,000 feet! If you want to experience that Rocky Mountain “high” there is no better place than the San Juan’s.

This workshop is scheduled to capture the aspen trees just as they are leafing out and there are still plenty of snowfields on the peaks to give them a distinctive look. The streams will be flowing strong and the air will still be brisk.

Instruction

This workshop is a field shooting workshop. While there are no classroom sessions I am using the field time for one on one tutorials and instruction in the field. My primary emphasis, while in the field, is to make sure that you are able to get awesome images.

Topics of instruction in the field include camera technique, proper metering for proper exposure, how to read histograms, composition for impact, filtering for effects, landscape photography techniques, and much more.

Sample Itinerary

The tour begins at 9 am on Day One and ends in the afternoon on Day Seven. We don’t have a fixed itinerary as locations and sites visited will depend upon weather and light conditions. Our rough itinerary will be 1 night in Durango, 1 night in Silverton then 2 nights in Ouray, and 2 nights in Telluride. This workshop will include backcountry tours of the surrounding mountains. The 7-day duration of the workshop will allow us to work at a steady but unhurried pace. Occasionally we will be up before dawn and sometimes we will photograph after sunset, there will be ample breaks during mid-day for rest if needed.

Location

We will begin and end the tour in Durango Colorado. It is located a short drive from the San Juan Mountains and has an international airport.

This workshop will get you into the high backcountry. We will explore and photograph the heart of the San Juan Mountains including spending time in three of the mountain communities, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride.

We will spend one night in Durango, then one night in Silverton, two nights in Ouray, and two nights in Telluride.
