There are few places left in North America with nights as black as night. Southeast Utah is one of those places. Great night sky photography requires great night skies. This location is perfect. This small group workshop (limited to 4 participants) is a great way to learn how to capture awesome night sky images. These workshops are a combination of field shoots and computer classroom. During the early morning hours you will be in the field learning how to capture the Milky Way and Star Trail images. During the day you will work in our classroom to realize the vision you saw at night. Our setting for the field shoots are incredible desert locations with wonderful landscape features. Desert landforms and monuments will punctuate the celestial skies to give your photographs impact and pizazz!
We practice “Leave No Trace” and sustainable eco-tourism practices while visiting these culturally sensitive locations!
Instruction
This workshop is a combined field shoot and computer classroom. During the early morning hours (when the Milky Way is at it’s peak) we will be in the field capturing beautiful night sky imagery.
These field shoots will provide the subject matter for daily classroom sessions. Classroom sessions will demonstrate post-processing techniques using Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. Instruction will include: print resolution, color space, using ICC Print Profiles, paper/media selection, image sharpening for print output, and editorial post-processing manipulation.
Each participant will work on their own images and have the opportunity to make several 8×10 test prints. Each student will leave with 2 finished 17×22, fine art prints, that evoke the photographer’s excitement and vision as first experienced in the field.
Location
We are based out of Bluff Utah. While this little town (Population 250) isn’t easy to get to—it is a centrally located for deep-dark night skies. There are several hotels and restaurants in town which make it ideal for a base of operations. The small and quiet nature on Bluff will warm your heart and add to your workshop experience.
The nearest international airports are Durango CO, (2 1/4, hour drive), Phoenix AZ (5.5 hour drive), Salt Lake City UT (5.5 hour drive) or Grand Junction CO (3.5 hour drive but connecting flights might prove challenging.) Stay in contact with us as we may be able to carpool you with other participants who are attending. While getting here is a challenge–it is well worth the effort!
