This is not just a tour of pretty places; it is an immersion into the culture of a landscape that has thousands of years of history. It is a place that will speak to you if you take the time to listen. It is a landscape that has been known to envelop the soul of many photographers and artists.
We will be shooting at night as well as during the day. This tour includes back-country tours of Monument Valley, Shiprock, and Canyon de Chelly. There will be night sky photography in locations not normally visited by most tourists.
This small-group tour (limited to 4 participants) is an automobile-based tour. Long hikes to locations are not required. I have designed this tour to minimize the amount of exertion and maximize your photographic potential. I have planned with native tour guides for the locations where we are going. This means that we will get to places that the non-guided public cannot get to.
Instruction
This workshop is primarily a field shooting workshop. There will be an advance lecture on camera technique for night sky photography as well as one on one tutorials and instruction in the field. My primary emphasis, while in the field, is to make sure that you can get awesome images.
Topics of instruction in the field include camera technique, proper metering for proper exposure, how to read histograms, composition for impact, filtering for effects, landscape photography techniques, photographing people with the Milky Way, and much more.
Location
This Tour will begin and end at Monument Valley Area. If you are flying into the area please contact me prior to making your flight arrangements as I am willing to help you maximize your travel options.
Sample Itinerary
This itinerary is intentionally vague as I will plan our shoots based up light conditions and availability of locations. A typical day might be that we meet at midnight to go out to photograph for 4 or 5 hours, then take a break to meet in the afternoon prior to shooting sunset (approximately 5-9PM) then repeat.
Day One through Three:
(March 22-24)
We will be in the Monument Valley Area, exploring and photographing the back-country during both the day and night. Using models for photography at night. Specific outings will be determined by light and atmospheric conditions.
Day Four:
(March 25)
We will travel to Shiprock for night sky photography of the iconic Shiprock or Tsé Bitʼaʼí (winged rock in Navajo)
Day Five and Six
(March 26-27)
Canyon de Chelly for back-country tours and night sky photography.
Day Seven
(March 28-29)
Return to Monument Valley
Day and Night Photography of the area and back-country.
The workshop will end the morning of March 29.
